Ken Byler paints in an Americana style and his favorite subjects are the Southwest, historic landmarks, small towns, and famr and ranch life.
He is self taught and has developed a mixed media style in rendering his impressions. Watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, tempura, day glow highlighter and even oils can sometimes be found in a single painting.
Ken paints on heavy 400 weight cold pressed paper with high rag content and then transfers his work to canvas with a giclee process. He then enhances each piece making each rendering different from the others.
Some of his paintings are Plein Air but most are from pencil sketches, Polaroids and memory. ken’s favorite artists are Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton, Maynard Dixon, and all the artists that have brought the Southwest art style into prominence.
Ken is a member of the Visual Arts League of Allen, The Allen Heritage Guild, associated with the Arts Alliance of Allen, the Boulder City Art Guild, and the Nevada Arts Alliance. His paintings and drawings have been featured, won awards, and sold in galleries and venues in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Arkansas.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Ken Byler has written several novellas, magazine articles, and essays on the Southwest and currently writes an opinion column for several weekly newspapers. He has assumed the persona of Judge Roy Bean in vignettes he as written about the “Law West of the Pecos” at poetry gatherings and he has played the Judge in a film produced by the BBC.
